Thematic Review of Hearing Services Program Legislative Framework
(CSPN - 201801)

The Department of Health is undertaking a thematic review of the Commonwealth’s hearing services legislation.

The purpose of the review is to consider whether the hearing services instruments, Attachment A, are fit-for-purpose, and whether they can be simplified and streamlined such that they are clearer and do not impose unnecessary regulatory burden.

The Government introduced sun-setting arrangements for legislative instruments to ensure that they are kept up to date and only remain in force so long as they are needed.

The Attorney General has declared that the legislative instruments made under the hearing services legislation require thematic review prior to their sun-setting date of 1 October 2019.

Your input into the review is being sought as to whether the instruments remain fit-for-purpose and how they might be improved.

It is acknowledged that hearing stakeholders have engaged recently on broader hearing issues such as the PricewaterhouseCoopers review of services and technology supply in the program and the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Health, Aged Care and Sport inquiry into hearing health.

It is important to note that the review will not examine major policy or funding issues. To assist your consideration of the relevant issues, some questions are provided at Attachment B.

Your continued support is appreciated.  For further information and to provide feedback please email hearing@health.gov.au.
