Button Battery Safety Update

Following broad consultation by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), the Australian Government has released four new Safety Standards for button/coin batteries and products using button/coin batteries.

  1. Consumer Goods (Products Containing Button/Coin Batteries) Safety Standard
  2. Consumer Goods (Products Containing Button/Coin Batteries) Information Standard
  3. Consumer Goods (Button/Coin Batteries) Safety Standard
  4. Consumer Goods (Button/Coin Batteries) Information Standard

Hearing aids and zinc-air button batteries for hearing aids are exempt from the respective Consumer Goods Safety Standard.

Other devices containing button/coin batteries, including remote controls, must comply with the Standards.

Consumer Goods Information Standards apply to all consumer goods containing button/coin batteries.

Transition Period

The new standards take effect on 22 December 2020 and an 18 month transition period applies from this date. Suppliers have until June 2022 to comply with the new requirements.

All appointed suppliers and contracted services providers are advised to familiarise themselves with the new safety requirements.
