Approved Practitioner Membership Categories
This page provides information on the approved membership categories for practitioners to become a Qualified/Provisional Practitioners for the Hearing Services Program (program). Only Qualified Practitioners with a Qualified Practitioner (QP) number, or Provisional Practitioners under supervision by a QP, can deliver services to eligible clients under the Hearing Services Program. Please note that only practitioners who are in an approved membership category for Qualified Practitioners are allowed to obtain a QP number. Provisional Practitioners or students must not be given a QP number.
Approved Membership Categories for Qualified Practitioners
Approved Practitioners
Under the program, hearing services must be provided by either a:
- qualified Audiologist or Audiometrist
- provisional Audiologist or Audiometrist, under the supervision of a Qualified Practitioner.
Qualified Audiologist
A qualified Audiologist is one who has an Australian university master’s degree in clinical audiology (or equivalent), and either has full or fellow membership with:
- Audiology Australia and is certified as an Accredited Audiologist
- the Australian College of Audiology, with competency in Hearing Rehabilitation Specialist and Diagnostic Rehabilitation Specialist.
Qualified Audiometrist
A qualified Audiometrist is one who has an Australian university diploma in audiometry or bachelor’s degree in audiometry (or equivalent), and has full or fellow membership with either the:
- Australian College of Audiology, with competency in Hearing Rehabilitation Specialist
Provisional Practitioners
A provisional Audiologist is one who has an Australian university master’s degree in clinical audiology (or equivalent), and either:
- full membership with Audiology Australia
- associate membership with the Australian College of Audiology.
A provisional Audiometrist is one who has an Australian university diploma in audiometry or a bachelor’s degree in audiometry (or equivalent), and associate membership with either the:
Once a Provisional Practitioner has successfully completed their internship program and provides evidence to their employer of their approved membership category, a contracted service provider may obtain a QP number for the staff member.
